BIOGRAPHIE DE MICKEY ROONEY

Mickey Rooney a été (et est toujours) la joie de vivre et le dynamisme personnifié.
A travers sa longue carrière (presque 90 ans) et du haut de ses 1,57 mètres il représente à lui seul la philosophie de la MGM de la grande époque, à savoir donner du rêve au spectateur.

Mickey Rooney, de son vrai nom Joseph Yule Jr, est né le 23 Septembre 1920 à Brooklyn (New York). Ses parents étant acteurs, il n'est pas étonnant de voir le jeune Mickey Roouney âgé de quinze mois, déjà sur scène. Il tourne ensuite de 1927 à 1933 une série de courts-métrages dans lesquels il joue le personnage de Mickey Mc Guire.

Mickey Rooney sait tout faire : il chante, il danse et il joue la comédie.
C'est donc logiquement que la MGM l'engage en 1934. Il entre au même moment à l'école pour enfants stars où il rencontre entre autre Judy Garland qui deviendra sa partenaire de prédilection dans de nombreux films (Babes in Arms, Babes on Broadway, Girl Crazy,...).

De 1937 à 1958, Mickey Rooney tournera dans une série de films dans lesquels il aura le rôle principal : Andy Hardy. A cette époque, les américains attendaient avec impatience la sortie en salle des nouvelles aventure du juge Hardy et de sa famille. D'ailleurs, ces films on permis à de futurs stars de se former : Kathryn Grayson, Lana Turner, Esther Williams...!

Pendant sa collaboration avec la MGM, il enchaîna une multitude de films musicaux et non musicaux, drogué aux stimulants pour se tenir éveillé, tout comme son amie Judy Garland.

On retiendra pendant cette période des films tels que : « Des hommes sont nés » (« Boystown » en 1938) face à Spencer Tracy, « Les aventures d'Hucklberry Finn » (« The adventure of Hucklberry Finn » en 1939), « Le grand national » (« National Velvet » en 1944) où il incarne le rôle d'un jockey (rôle sur mesure), « Ma vie est une chanson » (« Words and music » en 1948) retraçant la vie des compositeurs Lorenz Hart/Richard Rogers et dans lequel il retrouve son amie Judy Garland.

Jusqu'à la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, Mickey Rooney est une vrai star, à la fois une valeur sûre pour la MGM mais aussi adoré du public. Puis, comme tous les enfants stars, sa popularité à baissée une fois qu'il est devenu adulte.

Il fait donc ensuite des tournées à travers le pays, il a même son propre show à la télévision en 1954, il monte aussi sur scène sans pour autant délaisser le cinéma. Il participe à de nombreux films mais souvent pour des seconds rôles dont notamment : « Diamants sur canapé » (« Breakfast to Tiffany's » en 1961) ou il campe le rôle du voisin japonnais d'Audrey Hepburn, « Un monde fou, fou, fou » (« Mad mad mad mad world » en 1963) où il retrouve Spencer Tracy... mais le film le plus marquant de cette seconde carrière est « L'étalon noir » (« The black Stallion » en 1979).
Dernièrement, on a put voir Mickey Rooney dans « La nuit au musée » en 2006 au coté de Ben Stiller.

Sa carrière d'acteur s'est vu récompensée en 1983, date à laquelle il reçoit un oscar d'honneur pour l'ensemble de sa carrière.

Côté vie privée, Mickey Rooney n'a pas chômé puisqu'il a eu neuf enfants et huit femmes (dont Ava Gardner).

Il vit actuellement en Californie.
